REC Group launches greener, more powerful pure black solar panels

Singapore-based solar PV manufacturer REC Group is expected to start deliveries of its new Alpha Pure Black panel series in Australia from July, after the official launch of the up to 405W modules at the end of April.

The new premium PV product, which is targeting residential and commercial solar markets, offers lead-free production and what REC describes as a “substantial gain in power output,” as well as a gapless layout that offers a “seamless” and “elegant” rooftop appearance.

The Alpha Pure Black is based on REC’s Twin Design and patented split cell and junction box technology, also used in the original Alpha Series of panels, launched in Australia in 2019.

REC says the gapless layout ensures the efficient use of every millimetre of the panel surface, while also giving the panels a seamless “pure black” appearance, enhanced by the use of a black backsheet.

“At 219W per square meter, the panel offers one of the highest power densities on the market, helping homeowners  and businesses benefit from optimum use of space and even higher savings on energy bills,” the company said in a statement.

Features that might particularly appeal to the Australian market include an “excellent performance” in mild and hot conditions, due to a temperature coefficient of -0.26 %/°C, and a “super-strong” frame for extra protection in extreme weather events.

But REC is particularly keen to spruik the technology’s sustainability credentials, gained through the elimination of lead from all panel components, including cell connections, cross connectors and junction box soldering.

“This innovation is a testament to REC’s continued commitment to clean solar energy while saving on natural  resources, reducing waste and eliminating hazardous components,” the company said.

“The minimal environmental footprint is part of REC’s holistic commitment to corporate social  responsibility,” added REC Group’s chief technology officer Shankar G. Sridhara.

“Even today, a solar panel typically contains a small amount of lead in relation to its total weight.  On a large scale, however, the impact is significant, particularly when solar panels are recycled at the end of their service life.

“This means that  customers choosing the REC Alpha Pure Black are doing even more for the environment than just producing clean energy,” he said.

The new Alpha Pure Black Series is also eligible for REC’s ProTrust warranty package, which offers up to 25 years coverage on product, performance and labor, with guaranteed power of at least 92% in year 25 of operation.
