SwitchedOn podcast: The future could be even brighter

July 29, 2024 by Anne Delaney Leave a Comment

Australia’s energy ministers recently agreed to bring in Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for hot water heat pumps, incandescent lamps and digital displays like televisions, computer monitors and digital signage.

They also agreed to phase out inefficient and potentially dangerous halogen lights, which half of Australia’s homes still have. But they didn’t agree to introduce minimum energy performance standards for LED light globes, which are increasingly being installed in Australian households because of their greater efficiency.

The Energy Efficiency Council says that without these standards, the quality of LEDs on the Australian market varies significantly.

Jeremy Sung, the Head of Policy at the EEC discuses MEPS for lighting, heat pumps, and the Consumer Energy Resources Roadmap that was also on the Minister’s meeting agenda.
