China solar giant unveils world’s first 800W-plus PV module

Chinese solar manufacturing giant Trina Solar has developed the world’s first industrial-standard solar PV module delivering over 800 watts (W) of maximum power.

Billed as a milestone to ‘usher in a new era’, Trina says the new module, measuring 3.1m2 and produced with 210mmx105mm perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, achieved peak power output of 808 W – a figure certified by global testing, inspection and certifying body TÜV SÜD.

“This is a monumental breakthrough for perovskite/silicon tandem solar modules and a key milestone in PV technology,” said Gao Jifan, chairman and CEO of Trina Solar.

“The successful development of the world’s first 808W perovskite/silicon tandem solar module with a 210mm industrial-standard size is a significant step toward the industrialisation of tandem modules,” Jifan said.

“This achievement also reinforces Trina Solar’s leadership in PV innovation.”

Trina Solar, which occasionally also goes by Trinasolar, claims that perovskite tandem solar technology has the potential to exceed the theoretical efficiency limitations of conventional silicon-based solar cell technology, suggesting perovskite tandem technology boasts theoretical efficiencies of up to 43 per cent.

It is unsurprising, then, that Trina Solar is betting big on this technology, describing it as a “transformative solution” for the next generation of solar technology which is “poised to become the new industry standard”.

While Trina Solar did not provide any more details on the specifics of their milestone achievement – unsurprising, given the cut-throat world of solar technological innovation.

The announcement nevertheless represents a potential step change for the solar industry, as the technology is pushed further to deliver more power, efficiently and cleanly.
