China solar giant launches lightweight PV panel to meet huge demand from factory rooftops

Chinese solar manufacturer Longi has unveiled a new lightweight solar panel specifically designed for low-load commercial and industrial (C&I) applications.

Targeting those 30 per cent of rooftops which are not suitable for traditional solar panels due to load issues, Longi has unveiledi the Hi-MO X10 Light design Module.

Based on the HPBC 2.0 cell, the new lightweight solar panel weighs only 7.2-kilograms per-square-metre, a reduction of over 30 per cent compared to conventional solar panels, and a 42 per cent reduction from conventional dual glass TOPCon modules.

Using Longi’s new solar panel across a rooftop measuring 10,000 metres-squared can reduce the load by 34 tonnes. Longi’s own initial estimates suggest that this module could open the way for rooftop solar to be installed on 1 billion square metres of factory rooftops around the globe.

At the same time, the Hi-MO X10 Light design Module still delivers an impressive maximum efficiency of 24.8 per cent and a maximum power of 560 watts (W).

The power of each single module is 140 W higher than conventional lightweight solar modules and reduces the balance of system (BoS) cost by 33 per cent.

The new Longi Hi-MO X10 Light design Module is therefore able to deliver improved energy savings but also avoid the need for expensive and lengthy rooftop reinforcement, cutting weeks off installation times.

Longi claims its new panel is also more reliable than other lightweight alternatives, thanks to the anti-shading function common of its Hi-MO X10 series of solar panels.

Longi’s anti-shading and anti-fire functions help reduce the risk of overheating and fires and ensure the panels last longer under different shading conditions.

So far, the Longi Hi-MO X10 Light design Module has been launched in the Chinese market, and there is no immediate indication when it will be launched outside of the company’s home market.
