Discount supermarket chain Aldi has extended the launched of its ultra-cheap rooftop solar and storage offering across Australia, through select stores in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory.
Aldi unveiled its PV and battery offering earlier this year with a limited rollout in Melbourne. That deal combined a 6-kilowatt (kW) solar system, 5 kW hybrid inverter, and a 5.1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion phosphate (LiFePO4) battery for only $7,999, including installation.
At that price, concerns were raised around the reliability of the product, with an average 6.6 kW solar system with battery costing at the time between $15,000 to $18,000.
Nevertheless, the pilot rollout appears to have been successful enough for Aldi to announce the launch of two affordable solar and battery packages to selected postcodes across key metro areas in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, and the ACT.
The first package includes a 6.6 kW solar array, 5.5 kW hybrid inverter, and 10 kWh battery with blackout protection and installation included for $6,999. A second package, at $8,499, will include the same solar and inverter but upgrade the battery to a 20-kWh capacity option.
Importantly, and unlike the traditional discount stock that adorns Aldi’s centre aisles one week, and is gone the next, the Aldi Solar packages are backed by a 10-year warranty and a 25-year performance guarantee on the solar panels.
Aldi Solar is being delivered between Aldi and its partner Tempo, a leading supplier of consumer electronics. First installations are expected to begin in early November.
Aldi claims that its low prices are the result of the combination of the federal government’s battery rebate and its “commitment to passing on savings directly to customers”, adding that “customers can access larger battery capacities for less, without compromising on value.”
The entire process of making the switch to solar and storage has been simplified through Aldi Solar’s online portal which includes everything from roof suitability checks and purchase through to efficient installations by SAA certified installers.
“Bringing ALDI Solar to more Aussies along the Eastern Seaboard is an exciting step for us, expanding our commitment to delivering incredible quality and affordability beyond groceries,” said Simon Padovani-Ginies, group director at Aldi Australia.
“In true Good Different style, and in partnership with trusted ALDI partner Tempo, ALDI Solar delivers outstanding value and makes switching to solar simple and affordable for Aussie households.
“With straightforward pricing, flexible battery options, installation by certified experts and an exceptional payback period, ALDI Solar puts power back in the hands of households ready to take control of their energy costs.”
