Trina Solar hits new high on solar cell efficiency – its 27th world record

Chinese solar manufacturing giant Trina Solar has set its 27th world record for solar cell/module conversion efficiency or output power, achieving an efficiency of 25.9 per cent for its n-type bifacial i-TOPCon cell.

Trina Solar has made a name for itself not only as one of China’s largest solar manufacturers, but also as a company pushing the boundaries of solar innovation and invention.

The company’s research team has once again lived up to that legacy, setting its 27th world record in cell/module conversion efficiency or output power.

The new record was achieved with the company’s industrial larger-area 210 ×182 mm² n-type bifacial i-TOPCon cell, which achieved an efficiency of 25.9 per cent, setting a new record for large-area industrial TOPCon solar cell.

The record was certified by the Institute for Solar Energy Research in Hamelin (ISFH CalTeC) in Germany.

Trinasolar began its own research and development into TOPCon solar technology back in 2015 and has continued to upgrade and iterate the technology with more than 500 patents on TOPCon technology to the company’s name.

The latest record used Trina Solar’s rectangle wafer design that Trinasolar designed with the so-called “golden dimension” of 210 ×182 mm² and an n-type phosphorus-doped Cz silicon wafer substrate offers a high minority carrier lifetime.

Other technologies integrated into this latest record-breaking solar cell included tunnel oxide passivating contact, advanced boron-doped emitter, advanced light trapping, and very fine line printing technologies, resulting in a front side efficiency of 25.9% for this industrial size bifacial n–type i-TOPCon cell.

“We are delighted to announce the wonderful achievement by our research team. It not only sets a new record for large-area TOPCon cells but also breaks the world record for n-type TOPCon cells created and maintained by Fraunhofer ISE since 2017,” said Dr. Chen Yifeng, vice president at Trinasolar.

“TOPCon is the dominating technology in PV industry, with its high level of industrialization, higher customer value and lower cost. Our accomplishment indicates the great potential of TOPCon technology in future.”
