Alinta Energy and consumer renewables specialist National Renewable Network have announced the launch of a new virtual power plant deal that offers participants a rooftop solar and home battery system with no upfront cost, no financing, and no repayments.
The new VPP product, called Solar Together, is being launched in South Australia and New South Wales following a successful 50-customer pilot in New South Wales. It will then expand into Victoria and Queensland in coming months.
The VPP builds on the National Renewable Network (NRN) mission to boost access to solar and battery storage for households across Australia through “zero-cost” retail energy plans.
In this case, Alinta Solar Together customers pay for the solar power they use – at a cheaper rate than traditional grid power – and any electricity from the grid according to a time-of-use plan. A fixed daily fee of $0.11c covers network costs and provides access to the VPP.
Customers would take ownsership of the solar and battery system after 12 years, but can them at any time, at a price based that gets cheaper as the system gets older. Alinta says this gives customers the chance to try the benefits of solar before they invest.
This VPP model is one NRN is hoping to roll out with other energy retailers, offering what it describes as a fully managed and off-balance-sheet solution which includes asset ownership, sub-metering, and behind-the-meter retailing.
“We’re not just managing energy, we’re redesigning how the market works,” said Alan Hunter, NRN founder and CEO.
“Our platform gives energy retailers a stake in the future of distributed energy, with zero upfront investment and no asset liabilities.
“It makes solar accessible without shifting cost burdens to consumers, while giving retailers and installers the tools to grow together.”
Energy retailers pay for installation and upkeep of the solar and battery systems, but open new revenue streams and customer acquisition channels. NRN also boasts its own Solar Retail Partner (SRP) network made up of accredited solar installers.
“We’re excited to have partnered with NRN on this zero upfront cost VPP offer for our customers,” said Nicole Brolan, GM of commercial mass market for Alinta Energy.
“It’s a great way to make solar and battery systems more accessible and affordable for Aussie households.”
