The number of home batteries installed under the federal government’s rebate scheme continues to run at 1,000 a day, with more than 60,000 now installed since July 1.
Federal energy minister Chris Bowen says that is equivalent to more than a gigawatt and 1.13 gigawatt hours of battery capacity – about 10 days bigger than the original “Tesla big battery” that was installed at Hornsdale in South Australia in less than 100 days in 2017.
“That’s a huge boost to our renewable energy system and that will continue,” Bowen said in an interview on the ABC News Breakfast program.
“A lot of those consumers putting in a home battery are taking charge of their power for the first time. (They) used to just get a bill and not have much choice.
“Now you can decide how much you want to produce, when you want to produce it, whether you want to sell into the grid. All this is putting Australians in charge with more choices.
“It’s a pretty common theme, whether it be EVs or what’s on your roof, in your garage, on your driveway. It’s putting you in charge of the journey.”
