EV giant joins home battery market with “innovative” mix and match offering

BYD Energy Storage, a division of Chinese conglomerate BYD Company, has this week launched the new BYD Battery-Box HVE, the company’s first integrated residential energy storage system.

While the name BYD is more commonly associated with the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing arm of the group’s businesses, BYD Energy Storage has a range of energy storage systems for a variety of industries and use cases.

Available initially in Europe, this latest addition to the BYD Battery-Box family will offer two different module types, boasting capacities of 4.29kWh/76.8V and 6.45kWh/ 115.2V.

The smaller module type measures 345 x 660 x 140mm and weighs only 42.1kg, while the larger HVE module measures in at 115.2 V, 499 x 660 x 140mm, and 61.1kg.

BYD says the “innovative design” of its Battery-Box HVE means that the two module types can be combined into a single tower, allowing for increased flexibility as the 4.2kWh modules can be combined with the 6.4kWh modules.

While the smallest possible system configuration actually starts at 6.4kWh, BYD says up to four modules can be combined into a single tower to deliver a maximum capacity of 23.6kWh, and up to three such towers can be connected in parallel allowing for a total capacity of 70.92kWh.

Able to be mounted on the floor or wall, the Battery-Box HVE provides advanced energy management and can receive over-the-air (OTA) updates.

BYD Energy Storage also announced that the BYD Battery-Box HVE will be offered in combination with two newly launched BYD inverters, a single-phase hybrid inverter – the Power-Box SH3/3.7/4.6/5/6K – and a three-phase hybrid inverter – the Power-Box TH5/6/8/10/12/15K.

The single-phase hybrid inverters offer high battery charging and discharging current of 35A and feature full backup function with 200 per cent peak output power and seamless on-grid/off-grid switching as well as a maximum efficiency of 97.7%.

The three-phase inverters offer maximum efficiency of 98.2% and features 18A DC current, making it suitable for the new generation of high-power PV modules.

The three-phase inverter also offers an IP66 rating making it incredibly reliable, and is capable of providing full backup functionality with 150 per cent peak output power and a backup switch time of less than 10ms.

“The trend for complete solutions has been driven by customer demand,” said Jiang Feng, residential energy storage system director of BYD Energy Storage.

“We are happy to be able to fulfill this demand with our full suite for residential storage of the Battery-Box HVE in combination with the Power-Box inverters.

“The existing Battery-Box solutions, such as the HV Premium and LV Premium, in combination with inverters by our valued inverter partners will of course continue. This way we will provide our customers with full flexibility to choose from a comprehensive product portfolio.”

The new BYD Battery-Box HVE solution combination is expected to be available from the end of June across the European market. BYD also promised an additional new product for the European market will be introduced sometime in the second quarter.
