Rooftop solar installs continue to cool – but system sizes only get bigger

October 2, 2024 by Sophie Vorrath Leave a Comment

Australia’s rooftop solar market continues to cool its heels after a record July, with a second month of declining installations taking national market volumes back below the straight-line average.

September data from industry analyst SunWiz finds national market volumes down by roughly 3 per cent on August, with a total of 264MW registered for the month.

This extends last month’s solar-coaster dip, in what has been a pretty bumpy year – although as SunWiz notes, the September 2024 numbers are slightly up on the same time last year.

SunWiz managing director Warwick Johnston says the main driver of continued cooling of the market has been a decline in New South Wales volumes of 8 per cent, while most other major states were steady.

The cooling-off also happened across all residential system sizes, to varying degrees, while most commercial segments (except for the 30-50kW range) did a bit better in September.

The average system size for September 2024 increased to 10.22kW (+0.13kW on Aug ’24), this is the second-
highest month in recent times, Johnston says.
