A total of around 234 megawatts of new rooftop solar was installed on homes and businesses in the first month of 2025, delivering the second-best January on record, behind the bumper year of 2021.
According to the latest data from industry analysts SunWiz, a strong showing from the commercial sector helped lift what is traditional a quiet time of the year for new installs in Australia.

This put January 2025 around 6 per cent ahead of the same time last year, and also bested the monthly total for January in 2023 and 2022. Not bad for a holiday period – and a very hot one, at that.

Month-on-month, however, total new rooftop installations in January 2025 fell by around 23 per cent on the levels installed in December 2024, or around 70 MW fewer panels.
SunWiz managing director Warwick Johnston says volumes decreased across all states, with NSW
leading the drop with a decline in volume of 31%.

Consumers are still investing in big systems, however, with the average sitting at 10.23kW at the end of the month.
